Why do we buy into the “bigger is better’ mantra so pervasive in the media? What is so seductive about a bathroom the size of a bedroom, a family vehicle the size of a mobile home, a single-serve pizza that used to feed a couple, or even a family?
I have bought into this notion hook, line and sinker over the years and there are still times when the call is like a siren song, drawing me in, inch by inch; unaware until I find myself, tiny in a huge nothing-of-value.
Recently we have been living in what most would consider a small space – 3 adults in a 2-bed, 1-bath apartment – and it has been one of the best educational and values-clarifying processes in our lives.
Sometimes it takes a profound experience in order to see sense!!
The universe is a great teacher – first it whispers gently, then it taps you on the shoulder, pulls your ear, shouts in your ear, yanks your arm, tells loudly and finally it trips you up!!
It is up to us to learn to listen to the lessons sooner rather than later, preferably during the whisper phase 🙂
As we embark on a new phase in our lives I am learning to listen more quickly and one lesson I have heard loud and clear is that size does indeed matter – smaller is where the bounty lies.
Wishing you happy downsizing, if you choose to join me.
