I love when something catches me by surprise, I love when an experience exceeds expectations, I love the happiness that bubbles up from watching a movie that makes you laugh and sing along.
I don’t watch a lot of live television as I cannot stand the ads that assault me every ten minutes; at home we usually use Hulu or Netflix to watch the few shows we enjoy. Here in Mexico we do not have the same access and so we find ourselves channel surfing looking for an English speaking show. We discovered HBO which was a thrill for both reasons – it’s in English and there are no ads! Up next, the TV announced, Rock of Ages. Tom groaned and I was less than thrilled but figured the benefits outweighed the negatives (more surfing, ads guaranteed) and pushed to watch it, assuming it would be an exercise in tolerance rather than enjoyment.
It may not happen often, but I was wrong!
Turns out it was fun and funny; several scenes had us laughing hard. And the soundtrack, man the soundtrack… Xtreme, Foreigner, Quarterflash and much much more. We both sang our way through the movie; we loved the soundtrack. The only problem I had with the soundtrack was the tease of Steve Perry; one measure near the beginning and I spent the whole movie waiting for Drew to burst into “Oh Sherrie”.
The storyline is predictable, but then many movies are, and there were a few side plots that could have been edited out. It is certainly not high art but I got the impression that the actors had a blast making it; they came across as irreverent and they certainly did not seem to take themselves seriously. Russell Brand is always this way but it was unexpected to see Tom Cruise having fun.
I love movies that make me think, that provoke questions, that are the highest expression of art and I also love movies that are fun. Rock of Ages is fun, and the soundtrack, man the soundtrack…
