There is often a single moment when you feel you are finally XY or Z. I didn’t feel like a “real” Mum till after we had our second child and today I feel like I have stepped into another new role.
We bought our home and 20 acres 3 months ago and have had chickens and goats since the early weeks. Every day I go out and feed the animals, pet them, spend time enjoying their antics and generally making sure I am learning how to care for them. It is fun and time consuming work!
But yesterday, as I was herding the chickens back into their coop for the evening, I checked the nesting boxes and let out a loud yelp as I discovered our first egg – a beautiful green ovoid sitting in a cleared space waiting for me. I am now a farmer!!
Yup, the self-declared city girl is enthusiastically embracing the role of farmer.
We had several reasons for moving to the countryside and a big one is to become as self-sufficient as we are able in the coming years and a single egg has propelled me further down that path than buying acreage or a tractor ever could.
If you have never tasted a farm fresh day old egg, you owe it to your taste buds (and your tummy!!) to do so and if you have the urge to own chickens, do it!! The only reason ours take time is because they are out pasturing all day and we need to put them up for safety every evening. Most home owners keep their chickens in small moveable coops so there is less work to do.
For now, we are going to sit down for breakfast and share our first egg. What a glorious moment!!
